NBA Methodology

Why NBA Context Is Different

NBA development is a long game. Unlike the NFL, players often need 3-4 years to reach their ceiling. Giannis was a project. Kawhi took years. Even Curry didn't become MVP Curry until year 6. This means organizational patience and development systems matter enormously.

The NBA is also a star-driven league. One player can transform a franchise. But stars need the right environment — coaching, spacing, defensive support, and organizational culture — to maximize their impact.

The NBA Formula

Fit Score = (Development × 0.35) + (Roster × 0.25) + (Coaching × 0.20) + (Market × 0.20)

NBA weighting emphasizes player development infrastructure because the longer career arcs mean organizations that invest in development consistently outperform those that don't.

Development Infrastructure (35%)

The biggest factor — can this organization develop talent?

Player Development Staff (12%)

  • Development Coach Quality — Track record improving players
  • Skill Coaches — Shooting, ball-handling specialists
  • Analytics Integration — Modern development methods
Example: The Spurs' development system turned the 15th pick (Kawhi) and 57th pick (Manu) into Hall of Famers.

Organizational Patience (12%)

  • Rookie Leash — Do they give young players time?
  • G-League Integration — Development pathway
  • Minutes Philosophy — Earn vs. develop approach

Facilities & Resources (6%)

  • Training Facility — Modern practice complex
  • Sports Science — Load management, injury prevention
  • Mental Performance — Psychology support

Historical Track Record (5%)

  • Draft Success Rate — % of picks that became rotation players
  • Undrafted Development — Finding value everywhere
  • International Scouting — Global talent identification

Roster Construction (25%)

Who's already there, and how does the prospect fit?

Star Partnership Dynamics (10%)

Does an existing star complement or conflict? Luka needs shooters. Giannis needs spacing. Two ball-dominant guards rarely works.

📐

Spacing & Fit (8%)

Modern NBA requires spacing. Non-shooters need specific roster contexts to thrive. Ben Simmons on the Sixers vs. a team without another ball-dominant player.

Playing Time Path (7%)

Is there a clear path to minutes? Blocked by a star at your position? Or immediate opportunity to develop through playing time?

Head Coach (10%)
